Joshua Turchin is a multi-hyphenate performer based in New York. Performing for most of his life, Joshua has accomplished more than most people do in a lifetime. He has been on Broadway, performed at the famous Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles, produced numerous shows around New York, written musicals, recorded original music not to mention his voice over and acting accolades. Not only does he have an extensive resume, but he also plays 15 instruments and is working on a new musical about pirates. It seems there is nothing Joshua can’t do or won’t try! I was excited when Joshua said yes to this interview so I could learn a little more about this amazing artist.
When did you first start making music?
I’ve been playing piano since I could first reach the keys, but I really started taking lessons around the age of 5. Around that time, I also started writing songs!
What influences have inspired your sound the most?
Composers like Alan Menken and Jason Robert Brown have really influenced the way my music sounds. Lyricists like Howard Ashman and Steven Sondheim have also influenced me with how they conveyed emotion through lyrics.
Is there a constant meaning or message behind your music?
I view each song as a sort of mini world, so everything like plot and message are fairly self-contained. I have written a few songs about bullying, but aside from that, there isn’t typically a constant message behind my music!
What advice would you give to new artists?
JUST WRITE. We sometimes spend so long procrastinating that we barely get anything creative done, so just write!

What has been your best moment as a musician so far?
Whenever I play a really complicated song fully with minimal mistakes, I always consider those my best moments as a musician.
What do you like most about playing music?
I love being able to explore different forms of music and incorporate them into my playing style!
What is the hardest part about being a musician?
The hardest part about being a musician is that I’ve noticed there’s sometimes a big divide between the actors and other musicians. Actors should remember that musicians are performers too who can help them look and sound really good!
Where can fans follow you on social media?
Fans can follow me at @joshuaturchin on all social media platforms!
